verbing

I try not to be annoyed by the recent trend for “verbing” nouns—to medal at the Olympics; to gift something to someone; to be impacted by an issue, etc., etc. It’s curmudgeonly to grumble about it, and anyway it’s the nature of language to evolve. But having said that, I’m hoping that the verb “to ash” won’t catch on.

GIFTING. I can’t stand that word!! What’s wrong with saying “I received” or “I was given”?? I think it’s mainly come up because of all the stuff that PR agencies “gift” to media/clients and it denotes some kind of business relationship rather than a friendship. But still annoying.
