happy again

My twice-daily commute to and from work has been miserable for the last few weeks, thanks to Dostoyevsky and his exploration of the depths human beings can sink to when they are poor and desperate in Crime and Punishment. Now I’m happily re-immersed in Trollope and his world of high-society parties in country castles, where elders are careful to maintain the status quo by dispensing useful advice to unruly offspring:

“When one man is a peer and another a ploughman, that is an accident. One doesn’t find fault with the ploughman, but one doesn’t ask him to dinner.”
